Minister Mildred Oliphant saddened by death of construction workers

The Minister of Labour has noted with concern reports on the deaths of two construction workers after a boundary wall collapsed on them at a house in Somerset West, outside Cape Town yesterday. Three more workers are said to be in hospital fighting for their lives.

Minister Mildred Oliphant said: “This incident is a serious cause for concern especially as initial reports have indicated that the wall which was showing signs of stress and cracked had not been propped before the contractor started working to fix the defects.

“I have asked the provincial office to investigate fully the cause of this incident. At the same time, I would also like to urge workers to ensure that all safety measures are adhered to whilst working to avoid such occurrences”.

The minister further conveyed condolences on behalf of government to families and friends of the two workers that have died and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Government encourages employers and employees to uphold the principles of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
