Labour Minister to deliver keynote speeches at two Departmental events in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng this week
Labour Minister, Mildred Oliphant, will this week address two key events - one hosted by the Department and the other by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).
Her address will commence today where she will address an inspectors’ conference on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) which starts in Durban today and ends on Thursday at the Elangeni Hotel.
The conference takes place under the theme: Empowering OHS Inspectors to enforce OHS legislation.
Accompanying the Minister will be Inkosi Phathekile Holomisa, Deputy Minister, Thobile Lamati, Director General, as well as Agnes Moiloa, Inspector General.
Tibor Szana, Chief Inspector will focus on the state of occupational health and safety, while Elise Van Der Westhuizen from organised business will give a perspective on the contribution of the inspections performed by labour inspectors in ensuring decent work in the labour market.
Vuyo Mafata, Compensation Fund (CF) Commissioner will give progress report with regard to capacitating OHS Inspectors on the enforcement of Compensation for Injuries and Diseases Act.
The Minister will on Thursday deliver another keynote address at Gallagher Estate, Midrand in Gauteng.
She will be addressing the CCMA’s 2018 conference occurring under the Aegises’ state of readiness: implementation of the National Minimum Wage.
In its pursuit to promote social justice through the advancement of good practices in the workplace to ensure labour peace, labour market stability and economic growth, the CCMA, strives to continuously engage with all labour market stakeholders to facilitate social dialogue on topical, strategic and labour market issues.
The importance of these engagements lie in the fact that the labour market, in its very nature, is constituted by multiple stakeholders, with its stability reliant on effective partnerships, built and maintained through effective social dialogue.
Knowledge depositing, sharing and harvesting encourages innovation, promotes agility and advances foresight preparedness.
In February 2017, the National Minimum Wage Bill was approved by Cabinet, with the implementation date envisaged for 1 May 2018.
It is expected that this legislation will have a material impact in the labour market, and on the CCMA’s operations, in view of the new jurisdictions that the new legislation presents.
In preparation for policy implementation, it is necessary for all labour market stakeholders to engage on this new legislative regime and state of readiness.
The CCMA invites all stakeholders to attend this dynamic and ground breaking engagement.
