Minister Michael Masutha on death of Justice Skweyiya
Justice and Correctional Services Minister Adv. Michael Masutha has conveyed condolences to the family and relatives of Justice Thembile Lewis Skweyiya, who passed away earlier today (1 September 2015).
“On behalf of the Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services, we wish to convey our sincere condolences to the family, relatives and colleagues of Justice Thembile Lewis Skweyiya who passed away earlier today (1 September 2015). Judge Skweyiya was a brilliant jurist, whose legal expertise helped in shaping the jurisprudential elements in the justice system.
President Jacob Zuma appointed Justice Skweyiya as Inspecting Judge of Correctional Services, for a period of three years with effect from 1 May 2015. In a short space of time, the Honourable Justice Skweyiya displayed enthusiasm, and dedication, in the discharging of this very important responsibility for our country.Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during these difficult moments,” Minister Masutha said.
The role of the Inspecting Judge is to report on the treatment of inmates in correctional centres and on conditions of correctional centres. Judge Skweyiya retired from the Constitutional Court in May last year.
