Eight Correctional Officials killed in motor vehicle collision
The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Adv. Michael Masutha, has learnt with shock and great sadness of the passing away of eight Correctional officials in a horrific motor vehicle collision this morning, while on their way to their place of employment at Buffelsjagrivier Correctional Centre in Swellendam.
We understand that the officials were travelling on the N2 near Swellendam, when the fatal accident took place. We are informed that a truck, which was travelling towards the direction of Cape Town, collided with a bakkie, pushing the bakkie towards oncoming traffic where our officials were travelling. Eight officials lost their lives, leaving only one survivor.
At this moment, we cannot divulge the names of the deceased as the Department of Correctional Services has yet to consult, and inform, their families. Our deepest condolences go to all members of the family during these trying times, and we will provide the families and staff with the necessary support.
Minister Masutha urges all road users to drive with care, and make sure that they are considerate to other motorists in order to avoid this unnecessary loss of lives on our roads.
Details of the memorial and funeral services will be announced at a later stage.
