Minister Mashatile pays tribute to Zim Ngqawana

Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Paul Mashatile is shocked to learn about the death of Zim Ngqawana, jazz musician and founder of the Zimology Institute.

Ngqawana, a five-time SAMA award winner, was one of the finest and multi-talented musicians of his generation. He is one of the new South African musicians who took a fresh look at South Africa’s jazz and traditional music heritage. Ngqawana performed at the historic inauguration of President Nelson Mandela in 1994, where he directed the 100 person Drums for Peace Orchestra.

“He was a complete professional who was dedicated to his work. He knew the value of personal development and perseverance, said Mashatile”. Born in 1959 in Port Elizabeth, Zim was the youngest of five children who started playing flute at the age of 21. Although Zim was forced to drop out of school before completing university entrance requirements, his prowess won him a place at Rhodes University. He later went on to study for a diploma in Jazz Studies at the University of Natal working with the University’s ensemble, The Jazzanians.

He also attended the International Association of Jazz Educators convention in the United States and was offered scholarship to the University of Massachusetts, where he studied with jazz legends Archie Shepp and Yusef Lateef.

A multi-instrumentalist Zim was proficient on horns of all kinds (alto, tenor and baritone sax), flute, piccolo, harmonica, bells, whistles and piano. His musical pedigree extends further than jazz. He has produced classical music shows, fusions of hip-hop and jazz, big band jazz and traditional orchestras.

“His passing leaves a huge vacuum in our sector. He passes on at the time when the department needs compatriots of his calibre to achieve its goals of skills development, job creation and nation building. On behalf of government, we convey our sincere condolences to his family; friends and the arts, culture and heritage sector. May his soul rest in peace”, said Mashatile.
