The Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Paul Mashatile, has appointed a new council for the National Heritage Council.
The names of the council members are as follows:

Mr M Zwane (Chairperson) – Mr Zwani is the President of the Foundation for African Business and Consumer Services and Chairperson of the Business Council.

Ms N Majokweni – Ms Majokweni is the Deputy Chairperson of the Gauteng Tourism Authority and chair of the sub-committee on destination marketing. She is the CEO of Business Unity South Africa.

Ms Sindiswa Nhlumayo – Ms Nhlumayo heads the secretariat for the Human Resources Development Council of South Africa in the Department of Higher Education and Training and a former Deputy Director-General in the Department of Tourism.

Mr Jabulani Sithole – Mr Sithole is the academic co-coordinator for Historical Studies and History at the University of KwaZulu Natal. He is also the Project Leader for the KwaZulu Natal Liberation Heritage Route.

Mr Vonani Bila – Mr Bila is director of the Timbila Poetry Project. He also serves on the Limpopo Provincial Heritage Resources Authority and is Provincial Chairperson of the Scriptwriters Union.
The following council members are appointed by virtue of being Chairperson of institutions that also deal with heritage.

Prof G Nkondo – Prof Nkondo is the Chairperson of the National Library of South Africa. He is former Vice-chancellor of the University of Venda. He was Chairperson of the team commissioned to draft the National Heritage Transformation Charter.

Adv B Madumise – Adv Madumise is the Chairperson of the council of Iziko Museums of South Africa. She is also the executive chairperson of Khomelela Investment Holdings.

Prof A Oliphant – Prof Oliphant is the Chairperson of Ditsong Museums of South Africa. He is Chairperson of the Commonwealth Writers Prize.

Prof S Fikeni - Prof Fikeni is the Chairperson of the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA). Prof Fikeni has joined the Centre for African Renaissance at UNISA. He is Chairperson of the Council of the Walter Sisulu University and a former COO of the National Heritage Council.
The new council members have undergone an extensive induction session where they habe been briefed on legislation, governance, risk management, the council’s institutional history and the Mzansi’s Golden Economy Strategy of the Department of Arts and Culture.
The new council brings a range of important skills to bear on the heritage sector. The new council has the immediate task of preparing a strategic plan for 2012. The flagship National Liberation Heritage Route initiative will also be enhanced by the strategic vision and leadership of the new council and ably supported by the CEO of the National Heritage Council, Adv Sonwabile Mancotywa, and his team.
