Minister Sisulu commits close to R1 Billion to eradicate Military Veterans housing backlog in less than three years

The Minister of Human Settlements, Lindiwe Sisulu today announced that the Department of Human Settlements will prioritise close to 6 000 military veterans and the elderly in the allocation of housing for the coming five years. She added that Government has budgeted close to R1 Billion to build houses for Military veterans.

The Minister was speaking at the official launch of the 2014 Media Build in partnership with media houses and private sector stakeholders. Held under the theme "Restoring dignity to military veterans through human settlements" the partners are building three houses for the three oldest military veterans in Gauteng.

“Today we launch our dedicated programme that we announced in the budget speech to provide military veterans with decent accommodation, military veterans are very special people in our hearts, they fought for our freedom, and they deserve the best from all of us" Minister Sisulu said.

The Deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Kebby Maphatsoe who joined the Minister for the media build called on Military Veterans to value their houses and work with Government to address their challenges.

"Government is committed to addressing all challenges facing military veterans, from housing, medical and integrating them into economic opportunities, let us work together" He added.

The Minister also called on young people from different media houses and private sector companies to learn from the life and sacrifices of many militirary veterans. " One of our beneficiary is 87 years, Mrs Lubenga, she is our mother and everything we have today as a country is due to her and many like her, they are the founders of our nation" she added.
