Tourism Minister Lindiwe Sisulu has called on tourists and residents in KwaZulu-Natal to be vigilant and safe following the recent floods that left thousands homeless and hundreds dead.

The Minister sent her heartfelt condolences to all those who have lost their loved ones during the torrential floods in the province.

The extreme weather conditions resulting in heavy flooding have left a trail of destruction leaving many without homes and hundreds without jobs as businesses have been affected, including a number of tourism and hospitality establishments.

According to information received by Minister Sisulu, this week’s floods will cost the industry millions in revenue and hundreds of jobs. A number of tourists have cancelled their reservations following the heavy rains and floods, with some establishments left destroyed.

“I am appealing to all who are traveling over the Easter weekend to do so safely and return to their homes safely.”

“South African borders remain open and we are ready to welcome visitors from various parts of the world - we have globally-benchmarked norms and standards that ensure the safety of all citizens and visitors alike,” Minister Sisulu said.
