Minister of Labour meets Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU)

The Minister of Labour today met the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) representatives in Rustenburg in a bid to defuse the tensions at Marikana mine.

The meeting is a sequel to the troubles that have hit the Northwest platinum area and the subsequent deaths of 34 miners last week.

“The meeting was cordial. AMCU briefed us on their side of the story and what the issues that they are confronted with in the mines. We resolved to continue talking and we will involve other unions in a bid to find lasting solutions,” Mrs Mildred Oliphant.

The minister remains optimistic that a solution will be found not only for the Marikana troubles but for the other mines in the platinum belt that might be experiencing problems.

The ministerial delegation comprised of the Director-General Nkosinathi Nhleko, the Deputy Director-General Les Kettledas and the Provincial head Andile Makapela while AMCU, an affiliate of National Council of Trade Unions (NACTU), was represented by its President Joseph Mathunjwa with his high ranking officials as well as NACTU President Joseph Maqhekeni and general secretary Narius Moloto.
