Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mr Jeff Radebe is disturbed by the alleged rape of a 13 year old girl from Orange Farm on Johannesburg South by a police officer. The Minister has condemned the incident especially in view of it being allegedly committed by law enforcement who are expected to protect citizens.
This incident flies in the face of government's tireless efforts of addressing the escalating rate of sexual violence against women and children. Minister commends officers who, according to reports, responded swiftly by apprehending the suspect who was allegedly caught in the act.
The Minister hopes and expects the NPA and the courts to adopt an aggressive stance in prosecuting the suspect who is appearing in Vereeniging Magistrates Court on Tuesday 9 July 2013.
Minister Radebe has also assured the grand mother and the family of the victim that justice will not only be done but manifestly seen to be done. Counselling services will be provided to her as is the practice to all victims of sexual violence.
