Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini today, Friday, 11 June 2010, the day on which the greatest show on earth is hosted by South Africa, welcomed the world to the country's shores.
The Home Affairs Department has facilitated the movement into the country of multitudes of football fans from around the world, members of the FIFA family and guests including Heads of State and government through delivery of its three government guarantees to FIFA, namely issuance of visas, work permits and priority treatment.
Minister Dlamini Zuma said: "On behalf of President Jacob Zuma, the government and people of South Africa, we take this opportunity to welcome those who have travelled from the four corners of the globe to share in the moment; in this moment of glory and honour for our country and indeed the African continent, the first FIFA World Cup is hosted in Africa".
"We welcome the players and football fans from Asia, South America, North America, Australia and Europe. We especially welcome those from Africa to whom we have dedicated this world cup to. The opening ceremony later today will have distinctly African flavour. Your support in our preparations leading up to this historical day has been invaluable".
"The government and people of South Africa congratulate all participating teams, especially those from Africa and wish them well in their endeavour to become world football champions. Yet we remain convinced that our national team, Bafana Bafana will ensure the world cup remains on our soil".
"The world cup is here; enjoy Africa's diversity and uniqueness. The people of our country are ready to welcome you with open arms and a display of Ubuntu," concluded Minister Dlamini Zuma.
