Minister Gayton McKenzie sends condolences to the Nkondo family

It is with a heavy heart that we learn of the passing of Prof. Muxe Nkondo, a remarkable individual who left an indelible mark in the fields of literature, heritage and policy development. Prof. Nkondo’s untimely death at age 83 came at a time when he was serving as the chairperson for the Advisory Task Team appointed by the Ministry in the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture to work towards the development of a National Book Policy, with the aim of regulating the literary sector.

He led this team with diligence and integrity. The team under his leadership completed a first draft of the Policy. Prof. Nkondo was a born leader and mentor, a beautiful soul who saw humanity in everyone and celebrated the achievements of others.

“Prof. Nkondo’s passion, intellect and dedication have inspired many and shaped the landscape of the literary sector, and our academic and societal discourse – leaving a lasting impact on the literacy and creative sector,” said Minister McKenzie.

Prof. Nkondo also worked in different advisory roles for the Department, including for the Africa Month Reference group. Throughout his tenure the Professor not only imparted knowledge and wisdom but has ignited a fervour for critical thinking, creativity and social change.

“He has been a guiding light, challenging conventional perspectives, fostering dialogue and instilling a deep appreciation for the power of language and the art of policymaking.

“May his legacy continue to live and inspire today’s South Africans and future generations. The department conveys its deepest condolences to the Nkondo family,” said Minister McKenzie.
