Minister Gayton McKenzie mourns the death of actress Crystal-Donna Roberts

Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie has conveyed his deep sorrow at the passing of renowned South African actress and presenter Crystal-Donna Roberts, who died at the age of 40 following a courageous battle with stage four breast cancer.

Born on 13 October, 1984, Roberts spent her formative years in Bonteheuwel, Kensington, and Factreton in Cape Town, before completing her high school education in Bloemfontein. In 2005, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Drama and Theatre from the University of the Free State. Following her studies, she briefly taught high school drama before fully dedicating herself to an acting career.

Roberts made a significant impact in South African theatre, with standout performances in productions such as Rondomskrik, Kanna Hy Kô Hystoe, Bidsprinkaan, and Romeo and Juliet Unplugged. She also graced South African television screens in popular shows including Arendsvlei, Swartwater, and 7de Laan, where she portrayed the character Janine.

Her exceptional talent extended to film, with acclaimed roles in Krotoa and The Endless River, as well as television roles in Montana. In 2018, Roberts was honoured with a SAFTA Award for Best Actress for her portrayal in Krotoa, and she received a nomination for Best Actress at the prestigious Venice International Film Festival for her role in The Endless River. Her remarkable performances earned her further SAFTA nominations for Best Actress in a Telenovela in both 2020 and 2021 for her work in Arendsvlei. Additionally she left her mark as a television presenter on the lifestyle programme Pasella, showcasing her versatility and natural charm on screen.

Roberts made an invaluable contribution to the creative arts sector in South Africa and her inspiring journey will continue to resonate with aspiring performers and audiences alike.

“Her passion, talent, and dedication to her craft will forever be remembered, and her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come,” the Minister said. “When I consider how much more she could have done in what was truly still a young life, we are right to feel that we were robbed of someone very special.

Roberts was first diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2019 and faced her illness with remarkable strength and resilience. The award-winning actress leaves behind a legacy of excellence in the arts, and will be remembered as a devoted mother, wife, and daughter.

Minister McKenzie has extended heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and all who were touched by her life and work.

“My heart goes out to them all, along with her many fans on this sad day.”
