Minister Gayton McKenzie congratulates Patrice Motsepe on Re-Election as CAF President

The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, extends his warmest congratulations to Dr. Patrice Motsepe on his unopposed re-election as President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). This milestone reaffirms his leadership and commitment to the advancement of African football.

Dr. Motsepe, who first assumed the role in 2021, has made significant strides in strengthening CAF’s financial stability, increasing prize money for premier tournaments such as the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, as well as elevating African football’s global standing. Under his stewardship, CAF has successfully reduced its financial deficit from $45 million (R821 million) to $9.2 million, demonstrating prudent management and long-term sustainability.

His tenure has coincided with remarkable achievements on the field, including Morocco’s historic 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-final appearance and the resounding success of the 2024 AFCON in Côte d'Ivoire, which was broadcast in 180 countries—a testament to the growing global interest in African football.

At CAF’s Extraordinary General Meeting in Cairo on 12 March 2025, Dr. Motsepe emphasised the importance of continuous progress. He highlighted the need to recognise and address challenges while acknowledging achievements as a source of motivation. Citing Nelson Mandela’s perspective, he underscored the balance between problem-solving and celebrating progress as essential for sustained growth.

The Minister commends Dr. Motsepe’s visionary leadership and commitment to the development of African football, not only through financial reforms and improved governance but in ensuring that African teams are competitive on the world stage.

“Dr. Motsepe’s dedication to developing strong leadership within CAF will help shape the future of African football, ensuring its growth, stability, and competitive edge on the global stage,” said the Minister.
