Minister Gayton McKenzie congratulates Kgothatso Montjane and her partner on Wimbledon title

Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie joins all South Africans in sharing the joy on Sunday of our very own Kgothatso Montjane winning her maiden wheelchair doubles trophy at Wimbledon after finishing as runner-up last year.

Her success hopefully augurs well for more to come for all our celebrated Paralympians in Paris this year.

Montjane and Yui Kamiji from Japan won what is arguably the most prestigious trophy in the game of tennis, emerging as 6-4 6-4 straight sets winners against the Dutch duo of Diede de Groot and Jiske Griffioen at the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London, England.

It was Montjane and Kamiji’s third grand slam title together, underlining their status as the number one team in the world.

“Kgothatso, we are so very proud of you, and I hope that other young players take great inspiration from your success, both in the wheelchair discipline and the sport as a whole,” says Mr McKenzie. “We are expecting many more trophies and champions from Wimbledon and the other great global tournaments in years to come.”
