Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has learned with great sadness, that a total of 18 people have died and several others have been injured in two major crashes overnight.
On Tuesday evening, 10 March 2020, at approximately 23h30, a minibus taxi and a truck collided head on, on the N4, about 3km before Hectorspruit in Mpumalanga. Seven people died and seven others were injured in that crash.
This morning, 11 March 2020, at around 5h25 a minibus taxi and a motor vehicle collided on the R553 Golden Highway between Nancefield and Eldorado Park in Gauteng. The head on crash resulted in 11 fatalities and a number of injuries.
“Once again, our roads have claimed the lives of innocent commuters. We are deeply saddened by the nature of these collisions and the large number of fatalities. Among the deceased in the Gauteng crash, are three learners, presumably on their way to school, two of the youngsters were under the age of 10.
Our sincere condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in this carnage. The Road Traffic Management Corporation and the South African Police Service will investigate the cause of both crashes” said Minister Mbalula.
