Minister Fikile Mbalula commemorated World AIDS Day by joining Sports Heroes Walk against HIV and AIDS

Sport and Recreation Minister, Mr Fikile Mbalula, in commemorating World Aids Day, today joined Sport Heroes Walk against HIV and AIDS in the Sedibeng District of Gauteng, as they walked towards the end of their 13-days long HIV and AIDS campaign. The Minister joined the Walk in Sebokeng, where he handed over sport equipment to the Local Emfuleni Municipality. “For us to achieve the healthy competitive society we aspire to, the equipment we are handing over must be taken care of and be used for the intended purpose”, said Minister Mbalula. The Minister further urged the society to ensure that they stay active in sport and recreation, to better improve their lives.

The event took place at the Sol Tsotetsi Multipurpose Community Sport Centre, otherwise called Sol Tsotetsi Stadium, where more than 1 000 people attended to get information about the role of sport in the fight against HIV and AIDS. “We need to actively participate in sport and recreation in order to promote healthy living within our communities,” Minister Mbalula urged the community.

The Minister’s wish is to see more communities being actively involved in sport and recreation. In this way, he said, communities will be able to win the war against the various social ills they are facing, such as obesity.

The 2010 Sport Heroes Walk against HIV and AIDS was launched on 16 November at an event attended by various sport and business leaders. The Walk started on 19 November in Duduza and ended in Sebokeng today, 1 December 2010.

Sport Heroes Walk against HIV and AIDS uses sport as a tool to change people’s lives by utilising sport heroes to educate the community about HIV and AIDS and encouraging them to participate in sport.
