Minister encourages public to avoid alcohol

As we approach the Easter weekend, the Minister of Social Development, Ms Bathabile Dlamini, wishes to encourage South Africans to avoid alcohol abuse. “We remind all South Africans that it is possible to have fun without alcohol.

Let us use this weekend to rest and spend time with our families, rather than engage in excessive drinking that may result in unforeseen circumstances,” said Ms Dlamini. We are aware that during this period, many people engage in various activities, including family gatherings, festivals, bashes and concerts.

It is the responsibility of all South Africans to ensure that these festivities do not result in unfortunate incidents such as road accidents and domestic violence, among others, as a result of alcohol abuse.

Government is concerned that young people are mostly the ones with greater exposure to alcohol, often leaving them vulnerable to its abuse, thus having a negative impact in their lives.

“We urge families to take a central role in providing positive guidance to children and the youth by exercising parental control in a quest to help the youth not to fall victim of the negative effects of alcohol abuse, including crime and HIV infections,” said Minister Dlamini. The police will be all out to clamp down on public drinking.

The focus will not only be on drinking and driving, but also drinking and walking. “Fellow South Africans, let us be safe and sober during this hectic period,” concluded Ms Dlamini.
