Minister Dlamini Zuma urges youth to obtain identity documents (IDs)

Home Affairs Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma today Sunday, 12 June 2011 called on the youth of 16 years old and above to apply for identity documents (IDs) as part of the ongoing National Population Registration Campaign (NPR).

Speaking ahead of the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the June 16th upheavals in 1976, Minister Dlamini Zuma said, “Each South African citizen over the age of 16 is entitled to an ID which enables you to access services provided by government. You are also able to access other opportunities including, among others the ability to open a bank account and apply for further education opportunities.”

“On the 30th anniversary of this significant day in the calendar of our country’s history, youth must recommit to being vanguards amongst the millions of our people. Therefore, it is you who must lead the charge in support of government’s message that an ID is indeed a passport to a better life.”

“It is with this in mind that the department has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Education to enable our mobile offices to visit schools and help those who are eligible to apply for IDs.”

“To ensure that young people who may wish to apply for their IDs have the necessary support, the department will be deploying a number of mobile units across the country to venues at which Youth Day will be commemorated. At the main national commemoration venue, Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg, the department will deploy four mobile units for this purpose.”

“Young people across the country are urged to take advantage of these opportunities so that indeed, you may have access to an ID which we consider to be a passport to a better life,” concluded Minister Dlamini Zuma.
