Minister Dlamini Zuma urges matric class of 2011 to apply for identity documents (Ids)

Home Affairs Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma today Tuesday, 11 January 2011 called upon the matric class of 2011 to apply for their identity documents (Ids) well ahead of their final examinations later in the year.

Speaking in Pretoria, Minister Dlamini Zuma said, “Part of your preparations for your final examinations later this year is for you to ensure you are in possession of a green bar coded identity document. I therefore urge you to apply for your IDs, should you not have one already, as soon as possible at your closest Home Affairs office.”

“At the same time, I encourage all of you who are entering grade 8 or those who will turn 16 years of age in 2011 to also apply for your IDs.”

“Officials in the department are working as hard as possible to ensure applications for IDs are processed expeditiously. We will also be intensifying our campaign to visit schools during which we will assist pupils who are 16 years and above to complete applications for their IDs.”

“An ID holds the key to your future. It is required when you write your examinations, apply for further study or enter the job market. It is also essential when opening a bank account, applying for loans or acquiring assets.”

“The 24-hour call centre established to assist matriculants in 2010 will continue to be operational and can be contacted on: 0800 601190or 0800 204476.”

“Once again, I reiterate my department’s readiness to ensure that all South Africans are issued with ID documents as soon as possible so they can access opportunities that will enable them to live productive and fulfilled lives,” concluded Minister Dlamini Zuma.
