Minister Dlamini Zuma directs the delinking of temporary identity certificates from identity document (ID) applications

Home Affairs Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma was today Wednesday, 18 May 2011, alerted to challenges experienced by potential voters applying for Temporary Identity Certificates (TICs).

Temporary identification certificates are issued by the Department of Home Affairs to citizens when they have lost or misplaced their IDs while awaiting the issuance of new IDs.

Under normal circumstances citizens have to apply for a temporary identity certificate simultaneously with the application for a new ID. This has created problems for potential voters who want to apply for a temporary identity certificate only.

In this regard, Minister Dlamini Zuma has directed that the department must allow potential voters, if they so wish, to apply only for temporary identity certificates independent of an application for an ID. The cost of a temporary identity certificate is R140 (one hundred and forty rands only).

The effect of the ministerial directive is that this process will be implemented with immediate effect in all offices across the country

Our offices remain open until 19h00 today Wednesday, 18 May 2011 to provide services to citizens who may require IDs and/or temporary identity certicates to enable them to exercise their democratic right to vote.

Minister Dlamini Zuma, together with senior managers in the department, is currently overseeing departmental operations relating to South Africans wishing to cast their ballots in today’s local government elections.
