Minister of Transport Ms Dipuo Peters statement on the train collision at Denver station in Johannesburg
The Minister of Transport, Ms Dipuo Peters, express her heartfelt condolences to the family of the Metro rail security guard, Ms Tiisetso Napo, who untimely passed on today, 28 April 2015, as a result of the Metro rail train collision that took place early this morning at Denver train station in Johannesburg.
Minister Peters Minister equally wishes Ms Marcia Sambo who was driving the Tshwane Business Express (TBE) for a speedy recovery at Milpark hospital.
The Tshwane Business Express 1602 collided into the rear of Metroplus 0600 at the Denver Station.
Both trains were enroute to Johannesburg from Pretoria Station. Train 0600 departs from Pretoria Station at 06h00am and TBE 1602 departs from Pretoria Station at 06h15am.
Approximately 240 Metrorail passengers were injured and are receiving the best care at Milpark hospital and Charlotte Maxheke hospital respectively.
More than 120 commuters have already been attended to and discharged from Charlotte Maxeke, Milpark and Hillbrow hospitals.
Metrorail has set up two offices in Pretoria station and Pippet building just outside Park Station. Metrorail officers will provide assistance to settle claims and received directly with the affected commuters.
A board of inquiry has been set-up to investigate the root cause of the incident.
