Minister of Transport Dipuo Peters on crash on M2, Durban
Minister Peters has noted with utter shock and a deep sense of sadness the crash that occurred this morning on the M2, Bester off ramp in Durban.
“Our hearts go out to the families of the two reported deceased and 21 people injured whom we wish a speedy recovery. May our condolences reach their hearts and strengthen them in their tragedy: said Minister Peters.
Initial reports also indicate that two children were flung out of the window of a minibus when the crash occurred. The involvement of so many vehicles, a waste collection truck, minibuses and a sedan on the M2 North and South implies that it is quite a busy intersection which requires extreme caution on the part of road users.
“We are dismayed at the wanton attitude that our road users display in such circumstances. We are also dissatisfied by the lack of responsibility persistently shown by motorists when it comes to passenger and especially child safety in their vehicles.
"This is no judgment on our part nor do we propose to prejudge the outcome of an in-depth investigation into the crash. But it begs the question: What responsibility had each road user taken or failed to take that could avert such a tragedy?
"To the families and those who are innocent, our law enforcement and other agencies will leave no stone unturned. We shall do every other thing possible to arrive at a proper closure of this crash. And if anybody deserves to be prosecuted and convicted, then it shall happen”, concluded the Minister.
