Minister Dipuo Peters on measures to reduce train crashes

Minister of Transport calls for Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) and Railway Safety Regulator South Africa (RSR) to expedite the testing into the signalling system of Johannesburg (Naledi and Booysen - New Canada Line)

The Minister of Transport, Ms Dipuo Peters, has called on the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) and the Railway Safety Regulator South Africa (RSR) to expedite the testing into the signaling system between Johannesburg - Naledi and Booysen - New Canada. This follows the Booysen Train crash which took place yesterday, 17 July 2015.

Both PRASA and RSR have assured the Minister that the entire operation will be concluded tomorrow, 19th July 2015, around 17h00.

Should the signal testing operations take longer than anticipated, both PRASA and RSR should efficiency and effectively communicate any contingency plans to the affected communities through the mass media and Metro Rail communication channels.

Minister Peters thanks all commuters for their understanding, patience and co-operation during this period. Government remains committed to provide a reliable, safe and cost effective rail service to the people of South Africa.
