Minister of Transport statement on the Eastern Cape Butterworth- Willowvale bus crash and the Wapadsbergpass road crashes
As South Africa, today, Saturday, 29 August 2015, we lost approximately thirty four (34) people, as a result of a fatal crash that took place between Butterworth and Willowvale at the R408 road, where a bus lost control in curves and overturned.
About twenty (20) people are still reported trapped and severely injured. Rescue operations were on the site as soon as the crash was reported. More information of the crash is still been investigated and gathered by both the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and the South African Police Services (SAPS).
Upon the initial findings and notifications of the next of keen of the deceased, more details on the carnage will be released to the public.
On another separate incident in the Eastern Cape at the R61 Wapadsbergpass between Cradock and Graaff-Reinet, a minibus taxi overturned down embankment. Nine fatalities and five injuries are reported. This incident is also being investigated by the RTMC and the SAPS.
The Minister of Transport, Mme Dipuo Peters, passes her condolences to the families, relatives and friends of the deceased during this sad moment. On the same token, the Minister wishes those injured a speedy recovery.
