The Minister of Transport, Ms. Dipuo Peters, has welcomed the arrests of a group of individuals involved in a syndicate that has defrauded the RAF of approximately R11.5 million.
According to preliminary reports, seven people were arrested in the past three weeks in KwaZulu-Natal and appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate Court this week.
Among those arrested are three police officers, three doctors and a pastor.
Minister Peters has commended the RAF, the South African Police Service and other role players that assisted with the investigations for their swift action leading to the arrest of the alleged fraudsters.
"We congratulate the police, the RAF and all other people who played a role in this matter for their bravery and sterling work in the fight against corruption. We need citizens of this calibre and integrity to build a corruption - free society."
We want to make it clear that we will not tolerate any form of corruption in the RAF and we will deal harshly with whoever is involved in such dishonest acts irrespective of their status in societyâ€, said Minister Peters.
The Minister expressed concern that resources earmarked for victims of road crashes are being stolen by fraudsters.
The Minister has called on law enforcement officers to spare no effort in bringing other fraudsters who continue to steal from the RAF to book.
The Department has been informed that the net is being cast wide to round up other individuals involved in fraudulent activities.
