Following Minister of the Department of Public Works, Honourable Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde's visit to the Doornkop military base last week, a contractor has been given the go ahead and placed on site to deliver on the promise the minister made to the military.
During the minister's visit to the base, she was struck by the state that the buildings were in. Most of them required urgent attention. She promised that before the end of the year progress towards meeting the infrastructural needs of what she termed” a very important and unhappy client of my department” will have been made, and so it was.
Neither rain nor cold on 13 December could keep the Minister and her Deputy, Honourable Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu from living up to their word and expressing commitment to serving the clients of the department "faster and more effectively", as had been promised the previous week.
According to the minister, the promptness of this response becomes a yardstick on which the responsiveness of the department is to be measured. A sense of urgency now becomes standard practice in the delivery of services by the department.
Renovation of barracks is expected to be completed soon.
