The Minister of Public Works & Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, congratulates Infrastructure South Africa on hosting a successful Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium (SIDSSA), which provided key progress updates on the country’s infrastructure pipeline. The symposium brought together hundreds of delegates, including 11 ministers and deputy ministers from across the African continent, to discuss the challenges facing infrastructure projects and to develop innovative solutions.

During the symposium, Infrastructure South Africa launched the second edition of the Construction Book, featuring over 250 projects valued at more than R268 billion—nearly double the value of the previous edition. In addition, the top seven catalytic projects were announced for project preparation support, benefiting from a first-of-its-kind R600 million funding allocation to accelerate their implementation.

The top seven catalytic projects are:

  • Boegoebaai Port and Rail Development (Transnet)
  • Durban-Johannesburg Container Corridor (Transnet)
  • Coega SEZ 100MW Solar Farm (Coega Development Corporation)
  • LEUA Regional Energy Infrastructure (Limpopo Energy User Association)
  • City of Ekurhuleni wastewater conveyance and treatment programme (City of Ekurhuleni)
  • South Africa’s Water Reuse Programme (Department of Water and Sanitation)
  • Gauteng Urban Upgrade Programme – Johannesburg Central Business District (Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development)

“As we conclude a very successful two days, I would like to congratulate the team at Infrastructure South Africa, under the leadership of Acting Head Mameetse Masemola, for the hard work they have done to bring together thought leaders, dignitaries, investors, engineers, and politicians to engage meaningfully on infrastructure development. This event truly marked a turning point in South Africa’s infrastructure pipeline as we shift from talk to implementation,” Minister Macpherson said.

“Without a doubt, the symposium has been a worthy investment that will help us turbocharge infrastructure delivery and achieve our goal of attracting an additional R100 billion in infrastructure investment during the seventh administration. For too long, communities have waited for the fruits of our labour, and I believe this symposium will help ensure we deliver real results across the country.”

Minister Macpherson noted that while the conference had been an immense success, it is now vital for both the state and private sector partners to expedite efforts to attract further infrastructure investment and turn the country into a construction site. He encouraged private sector participation in South Africa’s infrastructure pipeline which will unlock much-needed economic growth and create jobs.

“Now is not the time for complacency—it is time to turn our words into action and truly make South Africa a country under construction. We must see shovels in the ground and cranes in the sky in communities across the country. And I have no doubt that we will achieve this goal through the partnerships forged at the symposium. By working together, we are building a better South Africa.”
