The Minister of Communications, Ms Dina Pule MP, has the honour of announcing the appointment of non-executive directors into the inaugural board of the South African Postbank. The names of the board members have been approved by the Cabinet. All the board members are appointed on three-year contracts, effective from 01 August 2012.
The appointment of the board members marks a significant step in the efforts of the Government to make affordable financial services available to all citizens, especially those who live in rural areas.
“The board has the immediate task of completing the corporatisation of the Postbank and appointing a Managing Director for the bank,” says Minister Pule.
"The board will have to expedite a process of ensuring that the bank is able to secure a banking licence."
Minister Pule adds that the appointment of the board and the Cabinet approval of the borrowing, lending and investment policies bring closer the goal of corporatising the Postbank.
“We are moving with speed to ensure that we bring all citizens into the mainstream of the economy. With its extensive network, including its unrivalled rural footprint, the Postbank is poised to help improve the quality of life of citizens by bringing banking services to them, especially those who are part of the estimated 15 million people who are unbanked. This deepens our Government’s commitment to building an inclusive society,” she says.
Minister Pule has also appointed the board of the Universal Service and Access Agency of SA (Usaasa).
This board is tasked with appointing a new Chief Executive for Usaasa and focusing the agency on its goal of ensuring that every citizen has access to ICTs.
The appointments are in line with Minister Pule’s commitment to acting with speed to stabilise the top leadership of the State-Owned Companies that report to the Department of Communications.
She is satisfied that the skills, experience and track record of all the board members will help the two State-Owned Companies to deliver on their mandates of bringing services to all the citizens.
