Minister commends over 30 000 South Africans who approached Home Affairs offices for identity documents (IDs) over the weekend

Minister of Home Affairs Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma today Monday, 7 February 2011 commended the over thirty thousand South Africans nationally who approached Department of Home Affairs offices to ensure they were in possession of IDs to allow them to register as voters in the forthcoming Local Government Elections.

In this regard, departmental officials who committed themselves to working full days over the weekend in pursuance of the department’s constitutional mandate to assist the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) deliver free, fair and credible elections assisted thirty one thousand one hundred and eighteen (31 118) South Africans in all nine provinces.

Of those assisted, twenty thousand five hundred and sixteen (20 516) South Africans collected their ID documents from various Home Affairs offices around the country. The department expresses its appreciation to these citizens while reiterating its call on all other South Africans who have not yet collected their IDs to do so as soon as possible from offices at which applications were made.

Officials also handed out one thousand and forty two (1 042) temporary identity certificates (TICs) which were accepted by the IEC to enable holders to register to vote. In addition, nine thousand and sixty (9 060) new ID applications were received for processing by officials.

Minister Dlamini Zuma has reiterated her appreciation to the officials who worked over the weekend in the service of the country’s citizenry.

The department stands ready to further assist South Africans acquire enabling documents to allow them to vote in the run up to the elections on a date still to be announced.
