Higher Education, Science and Innovation Minister, Dr Blade Nzimande, is saddened by the passing away of five lecturers from the Eastern Cape Community Education and Training (CET) College in a car crash that took place at on Tuesday, 23rd November 2021, when their light motor vehicle collided with a truck.
The Minister expressed his condolences to the families of Ms Vuyiswa Tenza, Ms Nkatleheng Nkunjana, Ms Mamokgeseng Motsatsi-Rajwili, Ms Thabile Valashiya and Ms Mapaseka Sekonyela. The women were from Mount Fletcher and surrounding areas in the Eastern Cape.
“I am deeply distressed by the news of such a loss to families and our sector. These bright lights of the Post-School Education and Training system were also final-year Durban University of Technology Advanced Diploma (Adult and Continuing Education and Training in Teaching) students,” said the Minister.
The lecturers had been on their way home from Mthatha at the time of the tragedy.
Minister Nzimande directed the Department of Higher Education and Training to ensure that the lecturers’ loved ones and close colleagues receive the necessary support and comfort as they grieve.
The Eastern Cape CET College has arranged a memorial service on Wednesday, 1st December 2021. Details will be announced accordingly. Funeral arrangements are also being finalised.
“As we mourn this loss, let us also express wishes that in their memory we all commit to build a community education and training sector we can all be proud of, and may their souls rest in eternal peace,” added the Minister.
