Minister Blade Nzimande received learning materials from SACHED Trust for adult education

Minister Nzimande had a successful meeting with South African Committee for Higher Education Trust (SACHED) on Friday, in Kempton Park, Johannesburg. The meeting was to hand over ASECA learning materials for Post-School Education and Training for our new institutional type of education - Community Colleges.

The materials, which are to be Open Education Resources, available to all have been adapted to support the newly introduced National Senior Certificate for Adults (the NASCA) Community Colleges are a successor to what has been known as Adult Education and Training (AET) under the Basic Education Department. On the 1st of April 2015 the Department of Higher Education and Training assumed full responsibility for this education within the context of a new institutional type, Community Colleges.

SACHED Trust is the oldest Non-Governmental Organization in SA formed in 1959 as a counterweight to apartheid based education. Blacks had limited access to higher education and lesser opportunities in the academic careers. SACHED Trust provided an opportunity to black students who sought an alternative to Apartheid university education.

The Trust developed new programmes with different entry and exit points for Adult Education.

The Trusts considerable experience and lessons gained in Adult Education, could assist the Department of Higher Education in its challenges in dealing with this critical and important issue.

“I am excited about this partnership. SACHED Trust in this area of our Post-School Education and Training came at an appropriate time. I am going to release the Curriculum Statement soon and SACHED programme materials will certainly add value in this regard” said Minister Nzimande.
