Minister Nzimande statement on the brutal killing of MUT employee and lecturer Mr Shan Dwarika
The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande, is deeply saddened by the news of the killing of Mr Shan Dwarika – a lecturer in Electrical Engineering at the Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT).
Minister Nzimande passes his deepest condolences to his family, friends and the entire Mangosuthu University of Technology community.
Mr Shan Dwarika was a resident of Verulam in KwaZulu Natal and was last seen in Sea Cow Lake attending to repairs at his property. According to the CCTV footage captured on the day of the incident, three men were seen forcing Dwarika into the rear of this vehicle.
Minister Nzimande welcomes the swift response by law enforcement agencies who arrested two suspects yesterday, 02 June 2023. The law enforcement agencies are also looking for other two suspects who are believed to be involved in this outrageous act.
“I denounce such barbaric and shameful act against Dwarika and any other person. I am equally concerned about the number of our university and TVET College employees who die at the hands of criminals. As a sector and society, we will continue to work with law enforcement agencies to ensure that perpetrators of such crimes are arrested. We cannot continue another day harbouring such disgraceful people, who take the lives of others with impunity,” said the Minister.
The Minister further said following the arrest of these suspects, he trusts that the criminal justice system will ensure the prosecution of all those responsible swiftly for this dastardly act.
Minister Nzimande has directed Higher Health to work with the University to provide the necessary psychosocial support to the Dwarika family and any other individual affected by this act.
Minister Nzimande will be visiting the Dwarika family tomorrow, 15h00 at the Dwarika family house in Verulam, KwaZulu Natal. The Minister will be joined by MUT Chancellor, Vice Chancellor and the Registrar.
