Minister Blade Nzimande meets families of two UJ students caught in crossfire incident

Minister Nzimande met with the families of the two UJ students who got caught in the cross fire, during a shooting incident in Braamfontein, on 29 February, 2024

Earlier today, the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Prof Blade Nzimande, met with the families of David Nxumalo and Dimpho Mosia. 

Nxumalo and Mosia are both students at the University of Johannesburg (UJ).They were unfortunately, caught in the cross fire of a shooting incident, last week Thursday, in Braamfontein. 

Unfortunately, Nxumalo didn't make it and Mosia is recovering in hospital. The Minister first met the Nxumalo family 

In this meeting, the Minister conveyed his condolences and reaffirmed the Department's support to the family. 

After this meeting, the Minister proceeded to the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital to visit Dimpho Mosia and meet with his family. 

In his meeting with the Mosia family, the Minister offered the family words of encouragement. 

At the end of both meetings, the Minister addressed the media. In his address to the media, the Minister expressed his sadness at what happened to both students. 

He commended the University of Johannesburg for its swift reaction and support to the family. 

The Minister also reaffirmed the Department's commitment to supporting the families, through the University and the Department's entity, Higher Health SA. 

The Minister was supported by the Vice Chancellor of UJ, Prof Letlhokwa Mpedi, the DDG: University Branch, Dr Marcia Socikwa and other senior officials from the Department and the University.
