Minister Blade Nzimande approves report of independent assessor into affairs of Vaal University of Technology

Minister Nzimande approved the report of the independent assessor into the affairs of the Vaal University of Technology for publication in the government gazette

The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Dr Blade Nzimande, approved the Report of the Independent Assessor into the Affairs of the Vaal University of Technology for publication in the Government Gazette.

The Report has been published in Government Notice No. 127 of the Government Gazette No. 43015 of 14 February 2020.

Minister Nzimande said that in May 2019, the former Minister of Higher Education and Training , Dr Naledi Pandor appointed an Independent Assessor to investigate a range of matters relating to governance and management at the University.

Prof Barney Pityana, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of South Africa assisted by Prof Rocky Ralebipi-Simela, former Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Central University of Technology and Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of South Africa were appointed to lead the investigations. Their appointment and the terms of reference were detailed in the Government Notice No. 647, Government Gazette No. 42461 of 15 May 2019.

“I would like to thank Professor Pityana and Professor Ralebipi-Simela immensely for their hard work in conducting the assessment, and submitting the Report which contains the findings and recommendations for restoring good governance and management at the University, said the Minister. 

Minister Nzimande also expresses his appreciation to the entire University community for their co-operation with the investigation. 

The Minister has also thanked all stakeholders who made presentations to the Independent Assessor, and all who cooperated with the Independent Assessor to ensure that the investigation was done and concluded successfully.
 
“I have shared the Report with the Administrator, Professor Ihron Rensburg for his response on the findings and recommendations contained therein; and how the University will give effect to the recommendations and I will also be tabling the Report before the National Assembly,” said the Minister

Minister Nzimande said that he is of the firm view that the recommendations contained in the Report will assist in restoring good governance and management at the Vaal University of Technology.

“I hereby urge the public to study the Report as this will assist in strengthening accountability and promoting the implementation of the recommendations, concluded the Minister.
