Minister Bathabile Dlamini conveys condolences on the passing of former Deputy Minister

The Minister of Social Development, Ms Bathabile Dlamini was profoundly saddened to learn of the passing of former Deputy Minister of Social Development, Dr Jean Swanson-Jacobs who passed away yesterday (7 July 2013).

Dr Jean Swanson-Jacobs served as a Deputy Minister of Social Development from 29 April 2004 until 10 May 2009. Prior to her appointment as Deputy Minister, Dr Swanson-Jacobs also served in various parliamentary committees including Education, Arts and Culture and Quality of Life and Status of Women Portfolio Committees, from 1997 to 1999; member of Trade and Industry Portfolio Committee and Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises, amongst others.

During her term as the Deputy Minister, Dr Swanson-Jacobs was instrumental in the fight against the abuse of alcohol and substance abuse, and was actively involved in the formation of community structures including the launch of the Ke moja-I’m fine without drugs campaign to combat this scourge.

She also contributed immensely to the improvement of welfare programmes with particular focus on victim empowerment programmes and services for people with disabilities.  

“Dr Swanson-Jacobs made valuable contribution to the work of the Department and government as a whole in various capacities and we will remember her contributions and her pursuit of building a caring society for the most vulnerable members of our society. Her passing away must strengthen our resolve to fight the scourge of alcohol and substance abuse and its devastating impact on the lives of our people,” said Minister Dlamini.

“I wish to convey the Department’s and my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of former Deputy Minister Dr Swanson-Jacobs and I wish them strength, fortitude and hope. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” added Minister Dlamini.
