The Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angelina Motshekga sends her heartfelt condolences to the family of Professor Russell Botman.
“Botman’s untimely passing is a great loss to our transforming society; he had a way of managing complex societal and transformation issues with wisdom and gave us all guidance from time to time,” said Motshekga
Russel Botman is Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University in the Western Cape. He joined Stellenbosch University in 2000 as Professor in the Department of Practical Theology and Missiology.
In 2002 he was appointed Vice-Rector. Botman is an internationally-known theologian who has advised the World Alliance of Reformed Churches in Geneva on several topics. He has served as President of the South African Council of Churches.
“Botman’s contribution to the fight against apartheid and the important role he has played in both the education and religious sectors of the country will always be highly valued.
He was a man of immense moral integrity and a true leader in many diverse capacities, within the religious sector and education. His contributions to the country and society in general will be sorely missed,” said Motshekga.
