Minister Baloyi to investigate purchase of 2010 FIFA World Cup tickets

The Minister for Public Service and Administration welcomes the statement issued by National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union's (NEHAWU) on the purchasing of the 2010 FIFA World Cup tickets.

In his parliamentary response to the Democratic Alliance on expenditure by the Ministry, Minister Masenyani Richard Baloyi indicated that the World Cup tickets in question were purchased by the Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS) and not by the Department of Public Service and Administration.

Minister Baloyi has undertaken to investigate the matter to establish what informed the decision of the GEMS management to buy the tickets and has requested an account of this purchase by GEMS Principal Officer.

The Minister would like to reiterate that “the department has not made purchase of these tickets and that this purchase was made by GEMS, one of the portfolio agencies within the Ministry for Public Service and Administration (MPSA), managed as a private entity reporting to a Board of Trustees under the Medical Schemes Act."

Minister Baloyi is currently awaiting outcomes for the request to the GEMS Principal Officer to account on the purchase of these tickets.
