Pretoria: The Ministry for Public Service and Administration has embarked on drastic money-saving measures that will see greater reduction in spending on advertising and marketing in the next financial year.
In light of the harsh conditions posed by the economic slowdown, Minister Richard Baloyi has directed that all future spending on advertising and marketing on newspapers, commercial radios and television by the department should be aggressively curtailed.
The Department of Public Service and Administration has spent R12 million in the financial year 2008/09 for advertising and marketing and a further R1,2 million during the period ending 31 October 2009.
Minister Baloyi said "While it is necessary to inform the public about service delivery programmes such as the Batho Pele principles, know your services rights, Africa Public Service day as well as the fight against corruption, it remains vital to maintain fiscal forethought during this economic climate."
"We remain firm in the conviction that government funds should be directed at the practical implementation of delivery of services to the people and minimise spending on all areas where it’s avoidable."
Minister Baloyi has directed the department to utilize other platforms for dissemination of information to the public such as the public broadcaster and community radio stations.
