The Minister of Arts and Culture, Minister Paul Mashatile, has learnt with sadness the passing of one of South Africa’s Jazz legends, Victor Ntoni. Minister Mashatile sends his deepest condolences to the family of Ntoni, his relatives and friends as well as to those he worked with in the music industry.
“We will always remember Bra Vic as one of our country’s finest jazz musicians and composers. He was a pioneer of the local jazz scene and his work will continue to inspire current and future generations.”
Ntoni, whose musical career dates back to the 1970s was the first ever black South African to play with a visiting foreign band when in 1976 he performed with American jazz legend Dave Brubeck. He has also worked with artists such as Abdullah Ibrahim, Hugh Masikela and Duke Makasi. He was due to perform at this year’s Cape Town International Jazz Festival.
“On behalf of all of us in the arts, culture and heritage sector we say; may his soul rest in peace. We are proud to have known and worked with him. His music will live forever”, said Mashatile.
