As our country and indeed many leaders of the continent and the world joined South Africa in celebrating the Centenary of the African National Congress, we experienced a sad and unexpected loss when an acclaimed guitarist, George Nxusa passed away on 7 January 2012 at the Manguang Outdoor Sport Centre.
George Nxusa, who contributed much during the struggle days through his music, was born on 9 September 1957 in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal.He was the bass guitarist of the eight member “Ihashi Elimhlophe” band. Minister Paul Mashatile has expressed, “sincere condolences for the untimely loss of a musician who was dedicated to his art and has contributed to the cultural lifeblood of our country. On behalf the Ministry I wish family, friends and fans strength in this period of grief. May we be consoled that even though George Nxusa is no longer with us, we have been enriched by his music that still lives on”.
Ihashi Elimhlophe is a household name in ‘Maskandi’, traditional Zulu music. They first recorded their music in 1986. The group has performed in Africa, India and Sri Lanka.Their latest album is “Phalaphala”.
The funeral is in the process of planning and is to take place in Johannesburg on Saturday 14 January in Ennerdale.
A memorial service will be held on 13 January 2012, at the Downtown Studio at 13h00.
