Minister of Arts and Culture accepts resignation of Robben Island Museum Council

The Minister of Arts and Culture, Ms Lulu Xingwana, met with members of the Robben Island Museum Council on the afternoon of the 25 May 2009.

The council briefed the minister on progress made towards the implementation of their mandate as well as current developments and highlighting challenges requiring attention.

After robust discussion of these matters, council members resolved to resign voluntarily with immediate effect. The Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr Seelan Naidoo, has also resigned.

The minister decided to accept the resignations. The minister will appoint an interim council and interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) as soon as possible. In the mean time current restructuring will be put on hold.

During June 2009 the Department of Arts and Culture shall commence the process for advertising for nominations for new council members.

The Minister of Arts and Culture will meet with staff representatives and stakeholders of the Robben Island Museum on Friday 29 May 2009 to effect a smooth transition.

The Department of Arts and Culture is confident that these developments will not disrupt the work programme of the Robben Island Museum and that this will proceed apace.
