Minister appoints National Water Advisory Committee

Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs Ms Buyelwa Sonjica is pleased to announce the appointment of the National Water Advisory Committee.

The committee, consisting of fifteen (15) members is tasked with advising the minister on all issues affecting water resources in South Africa including giving guidance on the interventions necessary to ensure long term water security.

The National Water Advisory Committee (NWAC) is appointed by the Minister for a period of three years and comprises individuals from civil society groups, the business sector, academia and water experts among others. Members are expected to provide advice to the minister on issues related to water resources and water service management. This committee is appointed in terms of the National Water Act, 1998 and the Water Services Act, 1997.

Professor Carolyn Palmer, a riverine aquatic ecologist will serve as chairperson of the committee. Professor Palmer brings a wealth of experience in aquatic ecosystems and pollution research and research applications in water resource management. In addition she has expert knowledge in the area of water resource management, regulation, mining and water quality, agriculture and climate change.

Mr Slindokuhle Hadebe is the deputy chairperson; he holds various qualifications in engineering and chemistry. Mr Hadebe also has over twelve (12 )years experience in the water sector with seven (7) years at executive level, his areas of expertise include, water resource management, utility governance and infrastructure development.

The other members are: Dr Kevin Petersen, Ms Muhle Joyce Mashiteng, Ms Mmule Violet Mpanyake, Ms Molatelo Montwedi , Mr Thamsanqa Sokutu, Dr Reuben Nyabeze, Dr Peter Ashton, Dr Jackie King, Dr Rolfe Eberhard, Mr Mhummad Mayet, Dr Laila Smith, Prof Roland Schulze, Mr Martin Ginster. Minister Sonjica has congratulated all members on their appointment to this important structure, the National Water Advisory Committee and has expressed confidence in their abilities. “I am very pleased with the composition of the committee, I am confident all the members will contribute significantly to the advancement of the water sector in our country”, said the minister.
