Minister for Rural Development and Land Reform Gugile Nkwinti on Saturday, 16 April announced a multimillion rand partnership with Thaba Engineering Consultants to build the first shopping mall in the rural area of Mayflower in the Chief Albert Luthuli local Municipality in Mpumalanga.
The building of the mall is part of the broader scope of Comprehensive Rural Development Programme which will see a creation of over 200 job opportunities to the Mayflower community. The 12 month construction of the mall will create jobs and the number of job opportunities will likely increase when the mall starts operating. The Minister told the community: "This is an answer to the president's question of why there is no mall in rural areas, and after completing this mall I will call the president to show him it's possible to have a mall in the rural area."
One community member also extended a word of gratitude: "Thank you, I am so ecstatic, I am not going to sleep tonight. We are no longer going to travel longer distances to town to do shopping and thank you!!"
