The kings and queens of the class of 2014 walked tall at Vodacom World in Midrand where they attended breakfast with the Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, and Deputy Minister, Enver Surty, on 5 January 2015 in honour of their outstanding performance in matric.
These top achievers have been referred to as “the best of the best” across the country because they are the first group to write the Curriculum Assessments Policy Statements (CAPS), which were introduced in the schooling system in 2012.
This year 27 top achievers have been identified to join the official release of the 2014 National Senior Certificates Results at SABC M1 Studio on the evening of 05 January 2015.
Speaking at the breakfast, Deputy Minister Surty acknowledged the top achievers for having worked hard during the examinations. “You are the shining stars and your accomplishment shows that it can be done. Thank you very much for your efforts,” said Surty.
The Minister thanked the learners for having made South Africa proud and advised them to keep the spirit of hard work alive - even at the various institutions of higher learning to succeed academically. “Thank you for making us proud and for the discipline you have demonstrated; the world is expecting a lot from you,” said the Minister.
Minister Motshekga also applauded Vodacom for their contribution to education. Vodacom and Basic Education used the breakfast as an opportunity to launch the free education portal. This initiative will play a crucial role in helping learners to access a variety of learning materials to boost their performance in class.
The Minister said that the partnership between Vodacom and the DBE will assist government to digitise schools to meet the demands of technology. “We have always believed as a sector that if we want to reach higher levels of quality education, Information Communication Technology (ICT) is the answer. Thanks to Vodacom for launching the education portal,” the Minister concluded.
