Minister Motshekga kick starts the School Governing Body elections
The Minister of Basic Education, Mrs. Angie Motshekga says the 2015 School Governing Body (SGB) election will be held from 6 to 28 March 2015. The Minister says the governing body elections were the biggest elections in the country taking place in over 24 000 polling stations (all public schools) with over 250, 000 members elected to serve in school governance.
The Minister encouraged all parents to support in the elections by standing as candidates or by participating as voters in the SGB elections as voters because without parental and community support, education can never be a societal issue as envisaged by government.
The Government has identified education as a key priority since 2009. Teachers, support staff, learners and parents are expected to work collaboratively with government to turn schools into thriving centres of excellence. These immediate stakeholders in education can organise their contributions to education through the democratically elected school governing bodies (SGBs).
Without the volunteerism, sacrifice, dedication, and contribution of SGB members, the department would not be able to fully implement its educational programmes. Government has entrusted School Governing Bodies with policies, finances and all other education resources in order to entrench transformation, constitutional values and the pursuit of academic excellence.
It has been proven over the years that schools that have functional SGBs, with parents who are actively involved and take an interest in the affairs of the school, the performance tend to improve. Low parent participation in schools reduces the oversight role that parents need to play in the sector, thereby reducing the sense of accountability to the community amongst.
As a parent of school going age children, remember that good governance in schools starts with you. Get involved! Your school needs you!
