Speaking at Sport and Recreation South Africa's (SRSA) annual National Conference, the Minister of Sport and Recreation, Reverend Makhenkesi Stofile, gave national federations a broad briefing on SRSA's vision for sport, and called on sport codes to support each other and show solidarity with each other.
The purpose of the conference is to brief federations on the latest developments in national sport policy and the work of SRSA in general.
The minister touched on a wide number of topics of national importance to sport including sport science, anti-doping, and the department's goal of providing access to facilities and training.
He invited federations to provide an input to the annual revision of SRSA's strategic plan, and help ensure that the plan is an alignment of national policy and the work of federations.
He called on federations to improve their commitment to sport development and ensure that plans put on paper are turned into action.
"Many federations were still lacking in this area," he said.
In closing, he called for solidarity in sport among federations. He cited national rugby and hockey teams that attended tri-nations netball games featuring South Africa's national team.
"This mutual support was crucial in creating national sport pride," the minister said.
