Minister of Energy, Dipuo Peters has urged mining houses to play their part by taking a leading role in energy efficiency programmes, Peters made the call on the first day of the Provincial economic infrastructure colloquium held at Sun City outside Rustenburg.
Mining is the greatest consumer of electricity in the province using 63% of electricity supplied to the province as the province produces 84% of South Africa's platinum,46% of the granite and 25% of the gold production in the country.
Minister Peters discouraged the use of grid connected electricity to power boreholes and agricultural irrigation schemes and advocated the use of solar technology to provide water and feed people.
Peters said that all municipalities in the North West Province are candidates for solar water heating, solar street and traffic lights and traffic light and retrofitting some of the tourism industry facilities and game farms.
