The Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources welcomes presentations received from various mining stakeholders.
The Committee invited mining stakeholders to share information which relates to the sector, as it prepares to host a strategic planning Lekgotla from 22 to 24 August. Stakeholders that were invited include the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), Solidarity, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), United Association of South Africa (UASA), Chamber of Mines and South African Mining Development Association (SAMDA).
In his opening remarks, Committee Chairperson, Mr Sahlulele “Zet” Luzipo, assured stakeholders that all the issues raised in the meeting would be considered by the Committee at its Lekgotla. “As the Committee, we will discuss all the issues raised at our strategic planning Lekgotla. Please tell us how you think we can improve our oversight work when dealing with the Department of Mineral Resources, its entities and relevant stakeholders, particularly employers,” Mr Luzipo said.
A number of issues were raised by stakeholders including concerns over non-compliance with the mining charter, health and safety, social conditions of the miners. The Department of Mineral Resources together with its entities will also make presentations during the three-day the Lekgotla. These entities include State Diamond Trader (SDT), South African Diamond and Precious Metal Regulator (SADPMR), Mineral Technology (Mintek) and Mining Health Safety Council.
