Military Veterans on inter-generational youth panel webinar

The Department of Military Veterans (DMV) in partnership with the Government Communication and Information Systems (GCIS) hosted an inter-generational youth panel webinar on June 16 Detachment on the 30 June 2021. The webinar participants reflected on their struggle and the events leading up to the actions of the June 16 Detachment as well how the current youth are influenced by the activism of the June 16 Detachment.

The webinar was hosted with the aim to honour and recognise the contribution of members of former combatants of the Liberation Movements such as Mkhonto we Sizwe (MK), Azanian People’s Liberation Army Military (APLA) and Azanian Liberation Army (AZANLA) who have fought for freedom, injustice and democracy in South Africa at the culmination of the 2021 Youth Month.

The DMV is further mandated to honour, all these constitutional military veterans firmly believing and cognizant of the fact that they are the greatest heritage of any nation. It’s essential for the DMV to ensure that there is efficient delivery and co-ordination of all activities that recognise and entrench the restoration of dignity and appreciation of the contribution of Military Veterans to freedom and nation building.

This is a first of many story telling dialogue about the struggle history of the nation that will shape the country’s future. Through these dialogues government aims to encourage young people to analyze matters of policy, guaranteeing their participation at the decision processes to create platforms of positive youth participation in government decisions

“The documentation of these military veterans’ stories will further consolidate the country’s steps towards reconciliation, nation building and the deepening our democracy. The dialogue represented the recognition of those heroes and heroines who should be enshrined in the country’s history for their sacrifices that brought freedom to the country”, said the Director of Communications at the DMV, Phumeza Dzuguda.
